And now, I bring to you the strangest new invention from MAC Cosmetics… the Spellbinder Shadows! These are rich, velvety loose powder pigments that sit in a magnetized glass jar. More on the texture and application in a bit.
The two shades I received were on the deeper end of the spectrum. I got Retrograde, a greyed black. And…
Higher Power, a bronzey brown.
Now these have the strangest texture since this is essentially a loose pigment powder sticking to magnets. You can bounce your fingers on them, like I did above, and pick up a ton of pigment (much like a creamy bouncy shadow).
After playing around with these, the pigments just sort of bounce back into place. You can see above, I have depressed my finger and rubbed the pigments all over. You can barely tell.
Shown are 2x swatches of Retrograde and Higher Power. The black shade is a bit patchy and, sadly, I didn’t have much of a chance to play with it before leaving for NYC (hi, I’m in New York right now!!!). Higher Power though, it’s so pretty and sparkly.
For the look above, I just used my finger to apply Higher Power dry to the lid. Maybe not the best decision because I think using a stiff brush with a spritz of Fix+ would have given me more control and pigmentation.
I do like the multi-dimensional finish of these shadows and they apply so soft and smooth on the lid. It really does feel like velvet. Paired here with Kat Von D’s Shade + Light Eye Palette, a recent IMATS purchase.
The MAC Spellbinder shadows will pop up online Oct 13 and in stores Oct 20. I would definitely recommend playing with these in store first since there is nothing quite like them!
